The Centre for Mathematical Sciences withdraws its accessibility policy
In November, Saco-S was made aware by several members that the employer had sent out an accessibility policy with requirements for office working hours for all employees at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. However, after Saco-S called for negotiations on litigation to examine whether such an accessibility policy violates the Working Time Agreement for teachers and others, the employer withdrew the policy.
The employer stated in the accessibility policy that "normal working hours or office hours are defined as weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m." and "normally, employees shall be available at the workplace on weekdays during normal working hours." Such an attendance requirement would be in conflict with our working hours agreement for teachers, where "teachers must be present at the workplace to the extent required by the activities and duties". Saco-S has a working hours agreement with annual working hours in order for teaching and research to be solved through collegial governance at the right level to promote quality in the core business. If the employer imposes an attendance requirement on our members between 08.00 – 17.00 on weekdays, it would be contrary to the collective agreement.
When the employer realized the problem with the policy, we reached an agreement in the negotiation and Saco-S waived damages. The department board shall be informed of the outcome of the hearing.
